Root Canal Process
What to Expect from a Root Canal
A root canal is a dental procedure aimed at treating infection or damage to the inside of a tooth, specifically the pulp (the soft tissue containing nerves and blood vessels). Before the procedure, your dentist or endodontist will take X-rays to assess the extent of the damage or infection. With the images a plan of action will be made for the best way to care for your tooth and a procedure will be scheduled.
The procedure itself consists of creating a small opening in the top of the tooth which is used to access the pulp chamber. Then specialized tools are used to remove the infected or damaged pulp, clean the area, and shape the root canals to prepare them for filling. Once the area is prepared, we seal the tooth with a biocompatible material to prevent any further infection.

Root Canal Aftercare
The area around your tooth may feel numb for several hours after the procedure. Once the numbing agent wears off, you may experience mild discomfort, which can be managed with over-the-counter pain medications. This will subside after a few days and you will be able to return to use your tooth as usual.
In cases of extensive tooth decay or infection, you may opt to get a crown placed on the tooth to restore it back to it’s full strength and function. While the standard composite is great for a majority of cases, a crown offer better support over larger surfaces.

Follow-up
A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to check your progress and, if needed, complete the placement of a permanent crown.
While root canals have a reputation for being painful, modern techniques and anesthesia ensure that the procedure is relatively painless. The benefits of the procedure, including pain relief and saving the tooth, far outweigh the temporary discomfort.

Alternatives to a Root Canal
The standard treatment for severely damaged pulp and nerves is a root canal. Alternatives include tooth extraction which is followed by either a dental implant or bridge. Other options include: endodontic retreatment (for teeth that have been treated previously), pulp capping (used when there’s minimal infection), or dental fillings (used for minor decay).
