Understanding Your Options

When to Consider Tooth Extraction

Removing a tooth is an effective way to mitigate extensive decay or remove damage that’s beyond repair. Here are some of the reasons a dentist will suggest tooth removal.

Damaged, Decaying, or Infected

If a tooth becomes severely cracked, fractured, damaged, infected, or has significant decay, the only option may be to remove the tooth. This can be safest for your health and provides the best options for restorative care and treatment.

Wisdom Tooth Removal

Wisdom teeth are the molars at the very back of the mouth that often come in and overcrowd other teeth causing a shift in the mouth. Wisdom teeth can also be very difficult to brush making them susceptible to decay or get infected.

How We Approach a Tooth Extraction

  1. Anesthesia: needed for almost all dental surgery to prevent pain and provide a pleasant experience.
  2. A small incision is made in the gum and exposes the root and nerves of the tooth. Small portions of bone may need to be removed to get all of the tooth out.
  3. The tooth is carefully loosened and removed from its socket.
  4. The wound is then cleaned, debris removed from the incision and stitches used to close it.

Recovery Tips for Tooth Removal Patients

Taking care of your mouth during recovery is essential.

  • Stay up on medications for pain control
  • Gauze pads for the first 3-4 hours to help control bleeding.
  • Saltwater rinses 3-4 times a day for the first week. (gentle rinsing)
  • Ice packs on the outside of your jawbone and cheek to help with swelling
  • Avoid solid foods for the first week
  • Do not use a straw for the first week to avoid dry socket
  • Brush often and gently to help avoid any infections
restorative options after tooth extraction

Restorative Options After Tooth Extraction

Once your tooth extraction is complete, decisions need to be made under the recommendation of your dentist for what restorative option is best for you.

Implants

A dental implant is the most modern way missing or lost teeth can be replaced. Cutting edge technology is used to digitally design and plan your dental implant so it works harmoniously with your existing teeth.

Dental Bridges

A bridge is a treatment that replaces one or more missing teeth utilizing the neighboring teeth as a support. Bridges are commonly done in 2 appointments and fabricated out of an aesthetic ceramic material to match your existing teeth.

When to Visit Our Team at Buffalo Dental

We recommend that you visit your local dental office two times per year to keep your teeth healthy and clean. Tooth decay and damage can be prevented by regular care, good brushing, daily flossing, and healthy eating habits.

Accidents happen and life can sometimes get busy, making it difficult to get to the dentist. But if you suspect that you have a cavity or a recently chipped tooth, be sure to make an appointment. Waiting any amount of time will only increase the chance for things to get worse and cause further damage to your teeth.
